High School Horror Movies

To no one’s surprise, I did not have a good time in high school. I graduated with my Master of Arts degree seven years ago, and I still wake up sweating from nightmares about being in high school again. After a particularly bad nightmare that involved a ten-page essay for a class I had never attended, it occurred to me how many stories in horror have their main conflict mixed with the familiar high school setting. Horror explores all aspects of life that are sources of negative experiences. It makes sense for horror to explore high school in countless ways. The list below is a small sample of high school horror films from multiple generations. From teenage angst, to bullying, to demonic possession, these horror films use the high school atmosphere to ratchet up anxiety and dread.

Carrie (1976)

Prom Night (1980)

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Phenomena (1985)

The Craft (1996)

Scream (1996)

Cherry Falls (1999)

Battle Royale (2000)

Ginger Snaps (2000)

Tamara (2005)

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

Thanksgiving (2023)

Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

Until next time,

Jordan
